Apoxyomenos Museum Mali Losinj

The island of Mali Losinj is not just sun and sea, but much more.

Since 2016, a museum has been opened that exhibits a statue found by a Belgian tourist during a dive on the seabed of Lošinj: it is an ancient bronze work of 192cm high.

The statue represents an adult man, an athlete, while he is cleaning his body from dust and sweat with a scraper after an exercise or a competition, for this reason the work is known as Athlete of Lošinj or in Croatian Apoxyomenos from which it takes the name the museum itself.

Having been in the seabed for almost two millennia, before being brought to its present state, the work underwent a major restoration which involved the removal of various materials such as pieces of wood, branches and pieces of fruit. The restoration took 6 years.

THE APOXIOMENOS MUSEUM

The museum is completely dedicated to a single work: the bronze statue of the young athlete Apoxyómenos, dating back to the 1st or 2nd century BC.

The museum is located in the Kvarner palace in the center of Mali Lošinj and today it is the artistic symbol of the island.
